It's time for a campout. Get your rain gear out. It seems that everytime we have a campout it rains buckets. Maybe the next drought we have we should plan a campout. :)
Now the serious stuff.
Resident Camp is coming up for the Webelos and current Bears. Let your leaders know the date that you prefer to attend. We have a choice of June 26th - 29, July 6-9, July 10-13, July 17-20, July 24-27.
Tigers and Wolves will be attending the Cub Drive-In on Aug 1-3.
Everyone should have gotten a packet in the mail regarding these dates and other info.
If you didn't get them then please call your den leader as soon as possible.
The cost will be fully paid for by Pack 998 but with the following strings. You need to pay half of the cost now and the Pack will pay you back if you actually go. Your half is not refundable even if you don't go..
If you have never been to a Resident or Webelos camp then please let me try to convince you to go.
If you have been to one of the camps, you can skip over the next few statements.
Last year was the first Resident Camp for me and my son. It was the more fun and tiring than I could have imagined. We were on the go from daylight to way past dark. Steven the camp director made sure that everything went smoothly and that everyone and I mean everyone was having a good time. We shot BB guns, we shot bow and arrows, we fished, we made things out of leather, we made doughnuts, we made trail mix, we sat in a TeePee, we hiked to the old Mill and threw rocks in a creek, we swam in the pool, we watched a movie and eat popcorn.
We drank more water than I have ever drank. It was very hot those 3 days. We flossed our teeth. Click here and look for Brent.
Brent told some camp fire stories too. Oh and on the last night it rained harder than I think it has ever rain since Noah built the Arc. It was more fun than I can explain on paper or on this web site.
If you don't plan to go please rethink it. I didn't really want to go my first time either and I think it would have been easy to convince my son that it wouldn't be fun, but now that I have been, I can't wait to go again.
My son doesn't get excited about much but Resident Camp is something that he has looked forward to all year. He even wrote about it in a Journal at school.
Ok, I'm off my soapbox.

We need you to submit your forms to your leaders before 4/7.

This Months Theme is Abracadabra. Can you believe it's April all ready?
The boys of summer are back and it looks to be a great season for the Louisville Bats.
Once again the Louisville Bats will be hosting a Boy Scouts day at the field. All the info can be found here.
We are wanting to go on the July 19th game since we have a campout planned for the 9th. Sign up on the Bats site.
The price this year is $6.00 for the game and $12 for the game and campout.
Click here for the signup form. or go directly to www.batsbaseball.com.
A word to the wise, the camping is crowded on the field and the buzzing of the leaf blowers will keep you awake until it is time to leave.
This campout is open to all scouts of all ages in the Lincoln Heritage Council.

This month is a very special month for the scouts. This is the month that they transition to the next rank. Please make sure that all of the requirements in your scout handbook have been completed before the Blue and Gold Banquet.
We have tried to do a lot of the requirements in the Pack Meetings to help.
The Blue and Gold Banquet will be held at the John Black Center in Buckner. It's the Aquatic Center in Buckner. This is the same place as last years banquet.
The price is $7 per person that will be attending. This offsets the cost of the catered meal from Marks Feed Store.
The banquet is open to all family members including grandparents, aunts, uncles and so on.
The Blue and Gold Banquet is another one of the Kodak Moments as it marks a mile stone in your sons journey to manhood.
You know your son grows everyday but this night you actually see it happen.
All of the boys have worked very hard on the requirements and attending the den and pack meetings. Not mention the various skits, flag ceremonies, Go and See it's, that we have through out the year. So please plan to attend the banquet.

March is here and you know what that means. A new theme for this months activities.
This month our Theme is Litter to Glitter.
recycle Here are some great links for recycling.
Recycling link 1.
Recycling link 2.
Recycling in Oldham County.
Last month was Chinese New Year. Our "Go and See It" was at the Crane House on 3rd Street. If you didn't get a chance to attend the event, you missed a great time. I know a lot of you thought it would be boring, especially for our young Scouts. Ask anyone that attended and they will tell you that it was a blast and the Scouts learned a lot about Asian history and culture.
We should also say Thank You to Teacher Hwang for teaching us about the Asian cultures.
Some of the things that we learned were:
1 - The Chinese invented silk.
2 - The Chinese were the first to brew and drink tea. And they have a special way of drinking it.
3 - The Chinese invented kits. They were used for military purposes.
4 - The Chinese invented fireworks.
5 - The reason Japanese people eat while sitting on the floor is because.
they want to use small tables that they can easily move and store.
6 - Japanese people wear special shoes when the go to the bathroom. This way they don't track the germs from the bathroom to other parts of the house.
Please check out the Crane House here.

Another Pinewood Derby is in the bag.
Next up, District Races on March 15 at Centerfield Elem.
Even if you do not plan to race in the District races, please try to attend even for a little while. We promise it won't be boring.
I would like to thank everyone for attending the races this year. It is truely one of the great events for the scouts and parents.
This years event was the largest Pinecar derby event that we have had since we bacame a Pack.
Were thinking next year we may have to rent out Freedom Hall.(grin)
How cool would that be, seeing your son on the centercourt JumboTron Tv thingy?
If you haven't seen them yet, we have placed pictures from this years events at www.scouts998.com/Photos.html. The pictures are sure to make you smile.
If you have pictures that you would like us to post please email them to kenny at kennartech.com.

Pinewood Derby Update.
The Family race will be an Open race.
Scouts, if you have a best friend who isn’t in scouting yet, this open race could be a great way to get him started.
The Rules are:
Open Class rules: (We will have “traditional car” and “powered car” divisions as participation warrants.)
1) Out of necessity, dimensions of width and height and track clearance need to follow the district guidelines. We will not enforce Length nor wheelbase, however a car longer than 8” probably will not fit on our start gate.
2) Car weight will be limited to 5oz.
3) No incendiary propulsion devices. (rocket engines) yes, this means if you can find a way to other wise propel your car within the 5oz weight limit, Go For It!
4) Propulsion devices must not engage until the gate is dropped.
5) You must have fun.
The Official rules can be found by clicking here .

The Pinewood Derby Races are just about here.
Can you feel it? Can you smell the paint? Can hear the crowd? Can you taste the victory?

Last years races were a blast and this years is sure to be even more exciting.
This year we will be having an extra set of races. We will now have a Family Race.
This Family Race will be open to the scouts family. Moms, dads, brothers, sisters are encouraged participate in this race.
To help keep the races fair to everyone the same rules still apply.
We have place an interesting article about the pinewood derby on our site.
It can be viewed here .
I love the quote from the scout, I can't wait to be a dad so that I can build a pinewood car and race it.
Good Luck to everyone and remember Your axles can never be to shiny.

Camping and Patriot Games Info

Patriot Games and Camping
Patriot Games at Ft. Knox is this Saturday and we will be gathering and departing Kenwood Elementary at 9AM.
Please remember that entrance on base requires a valid drivers license and insurance. This is an event not to miss as it occurs every other year and is packed full of activities for the whole family. Please be sure to wear your scout uniform. This weekend campout that was scheduled for Friday has move to late Saturday afternoon following our attendance at the Patriot Games.
Ft. Knox requires and an inventory list of items packed in you vehicle be listed and available for inspection. Therefore I recommend that you pick your gear up at the house after Patriot Games, change out of the Scout uniform and head to our Brownsboro Church campsite. Please be sure to bring food, beverages and all your regular camping gear. It should be a great evening for a bonfire, roasting marshmallows and some new campfire stories.

Camping Trip at Harrodscreek Baptist Church
What a wonderful turnout for the camping event we had in late August.
It was so good to see so many of the new members on their first camping trip with the Scouts.
A big Thank you to everyone that pitched in to make this a memorable event for our scouts.
The meals where great. I never knew that so many kids liked corn on the cob so much.
We also need to thank Chuck for his assistance with the surprise movie. I will never be able to look at worms without thinking of that movie.
Click here for some other recipes for worms.
While this link doesn't discuss Gummi worms, it does explain where Gummi candy came from.

Update
Thank you to Lynn Boon for the getting the info regarding our new members into the Kenwood Station Tiger Tales newsletter.

August 14,2007

Welcome to all of our new members who joined us at Harrodscreek Baptist Church on Monday.
You are encouraged to get involved with your scout during the activites in the den/pack meetings.
This helps you to bond with the scout and helps us keep them moving along. 1 Akela(leader) versus 6+ scouts doesn't work very good.
Please checkout the calendar web page. This is where you can find out when and where we are meeting.
If you are getting emails regarding these events and want to get them to stop, please let Brent or Kenny know.
If you aren't getting the emails and want to start getting them, you too can tell Brent or Kenny.

Cub Resident Camp was fabulous. I can't say enough about Tunnel Mills and Stephen and his staff.
From sun up to sun down it was nothing but pure fun and excitment.
Here are a few things that were overheard this past weekend.
1 - Can we stay all week?
2 - I want to do this next year and the year after and the year after and the year after.
3 - Parent to scout - did you hear that loud thunderstorm last night, I thought it struck our tent? Scout - Yawn, no.
4 - Parent to scout - What was the funest thing you did this weekend? Scout - Slept in a tent.
5 - Next year I'm bringing a blowup mattress.
6 - Next year I'm spending the $20 on the tent fan.

Wondering how you can help the pack?
Think you don't have any skills that could benefit scouting?
Can you tie a knot?
Can you research fun activities that the scouts would like to do?
Can you hammer a nail?
Can you pop popcorn?
Can you bake cookies?
Can you start a fire with two sticks? Well maybe that's going to far, unless of course you really can.
Have a special skill to make learning fun?
At the next meeting have a look around. Every leader there thought that they didn't have any skills that could be used in scouting.
We are always looking for volunteers. Scouting even offers classes to get you started.

Flag Day

Flag Day is coming up on June 14th.
Not sure what Flag is all about? Have a look at this site Flag Day details.

This months theme is "Wheel into Summer"
Did you know:
Most authorities regard the wheel as one of the oldest and most important inventions, which originated in ancient Sumer in Mesopotamia (modern Iraq) in the 5th millennium BC, originally in the function of potter's wheels.

"The goodness of a person and of the society he or she lives in often comes down to very simple things and words found in the Scout Law. Every society depends on trust and loyalty, on courtesy and kindness, on bravery and reverence. These are the values of Scouting, and these are the values of Americans."

President George W. Bush

District Race Cars

What a crazy month March has been. The Pine Car derby has been a huge success. We would like to thank all the volunteers and parents for making this such a wondeful event for the scouts.
